Lessons About Children While Learning To Knit

When I was in college a very good friend, and now Grammy to our children, made an attempt to teach me how to knit.  I think I made it through one lesson and then gave up.  I did not think that I would ever be able to learn.  So, I admit, like everyone else, I do not like to fail.  I am several years older and hopefully, several years wiser.  And I am going to learn how to knit!  You see, it isn't just for me now.  I want to knit so that I can make a blanket for our Ethiopian children.  I do know how to crochet (thanks to the patient teaching of my lovely sister-in-law, Marla), and I will learn how to knit (thanks to a dear friend, Cindy).
Yesterday was my first lesson.  Now I remember why I quit after my "other first lesson".  This is NOT easy.
Cindy kept saying, "Don't worry about how it looks right now.  Just get the motions of it."  However, I kept looking at my work and thinking, "This is NOT how it is supposed to look".  Realizing the frustration that I was having at trying to learn something new, Cindy, in all her wisdom, gave me a lesson that I will take with me as I teach my children.  She said that learning something like this is really good for a mom.  It will help you understand how difficult and frustrating it can be for your child when they are trying to learn something that may come easily for you but not for them.  Thank you, Cindy, for saying that.  I was reminded that my children will need my patient, loving guidance.  They will not want to fail, and they will be frustrated, as I am while trying to learn how to knit.  I won't want my children to give up just because their drawing doesn't look like the original or because they can't play like Mozart if they learn how to play the piano.
So, I will learn how to knit.  I may not ever have the talent to knit like Grammy or like Cindy.  But this time I will not give up.  And Praise the Lord, He has already used knitting to teach me life lessons about my children.
