I was reading this blog http://oatsvallteam.blogspot.com and it got me thinking.... The truth is these thoughts have been on our minds (mine and Greg's) for some time now. So, when I read the quote that I have copied and pasted at the end of this post, I felt that I finally needed to share my thoughts.
I have had several people say to me, "That's great that you 'can' adopt, but not everyone is called to adopt." And they are exactly right on ONE account - not everyone is called to adopt. However, I would venture to say that many more are called, but choose other (less important?) things instead of choosing to make a child their own. Wow, did I just say that? Well now... I guess I did, and to be honest, it feels good to get it off my chest. Mind you, I have no one in particular on my mind. We don't know God's plan for anyone else's life, and we would never try to tell anyone that God has called them to adopt a child. However, we do know that God loves the orphan and has called ALL of His adopted children to care for orphans. Could it be that He is tugging at your heart to use what He has given to you to be father or mother to a child? This is not about charity. We are not adopting again for charities sake!! This is about Gospel living, and if you are not sure what I mean when I say that, please ask! :)
What is God's heart for adoption? Did He have to adopt us? Did He need to adopt us because there was something lacking in the communion and fellowship of the Godhead? Did He think the cost was too much? Did He think it was too risky? Is our adoption in Christ only a metaphor OR are we His real children? God's passion is to glorify Himself, and He glorifies himself by adopting us - lost children, who need hope and a home. And now...oh, YES, and now, we are not illegitimate children. We are brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ; We are heirs, because God, in His sovereign grace, and because of His great mercy, adopted us and made us HIS OWN.
Greg and I have had many people say to us, "We would love to adopt...someday." And to that I give you this quote that caught my eye and pricked my heart:
"I will never forget the day I walked into a government building in Changsha, China to see a room of 11 baby girls ... My eyes were instantly drawn to my sweet Emily ... I had fallen in love w/ her before I had ever even met her, but that day I feel deeply in love with my Heavenly Father ... I saw Him for the first time in a real tangible way ... I am telling any of you out there if you HAVE EVER felt adoption on your heart DON'T wait ... There are 147 Million Orphans waiting for you to decided to come love them, give them a home, and make them part of a family ... They want to belong !!! DON'T WE ALL ... What is worth more than a life ??? A college fund ??? A second home ??? Going out to eat twice a week ??? A new car ??? Not wanting to have another responsibility ??? Desiring to retire ??? What ???
I can honestly tell you that nothing has more value here on earth than to give a child a home and give God the honor and glory of serving His kingdom !!!
After all IT IS ALL ABOUT HIM !!!"
This was so encouraging to us Rebekah as we seek to walk in obedience to God! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteChristine, you two are an encouragement to us! We praise God for your family! We can't wait to meet your daughter!
ReplyDeleteAMEN and AMEN!!!
ReplyDeleteI read your comment to a blog I, too, follow. Congratulations on your adoptions. You mentioned you are planning on going to Ethiopia. I am wondering if you have read Melissa Fay Greene's book There is no me without you? It is about Ethiopia, politics, AIDS, orphans and orphanages and adoption. Good book; I'd recommend it.
ReplyDeleteJefferson, thank you for the recommendation. I have heard of the book, but have not yet read it. I will check it out!
